What This Means for Employers

Investing in a Diabetes Prevention Program is not just health-smart—it’s economics-savvy:

  • Save money on future healthcare costs.

  • Improve productivity by keeping employees healthy.

  • Reduce absenteeism and presenteeism, which drag on operations and morale.

  • Prevention programs pay off. The National DPP and digital versions provide solid return on investment (ROI), offering direct medical cost savings exceeding program costs (DPP: ~$571 vs savings of ~$598+).

  • Managing diabetes is expensive. U.S. healthcare and productivity costs attributable to diabetes exceed $400 billion per year, with indirect costs making up a substantial portion.

  • For employers, the losses are steep. Absenteeism and presenteeism from chronic conditions cost businesses billions annually—up to $106 billion in reduced productivity, disability, and mortality.

  • Employees with diabetes incur higher costs. Medical expenditures are more than double those without diabetes, and productivity loss is significant.

  • Even small productivity improvements matter. Simple interventions can save hundreds per employee annually.
